Press Release - October 3, 2014, Costa Mesa, CA

When we first received news that JP Auclair and Andreas Fransson were caught in an avalanche while climbing in Patagonia, we held out hope. We can now speak with certainty about one of the most difficult things to acknowledge - the loss of two incredible human beings. Our thoughts and prayers are with JP and Andreas’ families.

The loss of our co-founder, JP, in particular, is overwhelming for us. He had an incredible impact on everything he touched. JP pioneered and transcended skiing genres and left an indelible mark on the sport. He was a philanthropist, entrepreneur, director and filmmaker, photographer, designer, climber, skater, mountain biker, guide, X Games competitor, member of the New Canadian Air Force, and one of the few non-Japanese citizens to be certified at Kendama. JP was our favorite person to be around; he was hilarious and he was kind. Above all, JP was a father, a fiancé, a son, a brother, a godfather, a friend, and genuinely magnificent human.

Many people are asking what they can do to help. JP’s family would like to see donations directed to support Léo and Ingrid through the Auclair Fund or to the non-profit JP started, Alpine Initiatives.

Today, tomorrow and always, JP’s legacy will live on. In Ingrid and their son Léo, in skiing, in Alpine Initiatives, in Armada, and in the countless lives that were made better because of him.

Love,

The Armada Family - www.armadaskis.com

JP Auclair is skiing’s renaissance man.
— Powder Magazine, February 2013

I consider JP to be one of the most brilliant minds of the action sports world—creative, dedicated, principled, and universally loved. He’s had an outstanding career as a pro skier and has been one of the most influential skiers of all time
— Mike Douglas, Salomon Freeski TV

I introduced [JP] to my friend Jonas and, quoting a study he read about saying that hugging someone for longer than 20 seconds creates an emotional bond between people, hugged him for 30 seconds and made yet another person feel as if they’d just made a new best friend. JP was a badass skier, a visionary filmmaker, and most importantly an immensely kind person.

From moguls to terrain parks, to backcountry booters, Alaskan spines, and mountaineering lines, and, most famously, a through-the-streets segment for the Sherpas Cinema film All.I.Can., JP proved that the fractured sections of skiing are merely self-constructed walls that can and should be torn down. JP Auclair will be remembered as the best all-around skier the sport has ever known.

Beyond his immense talent, Auclair was kind, humble, and gracious. In 2008, he launched a non-profit, Alpine Initiatives, that connects the mountain sports community with community service projects worldwide.
— Kelley McMillan, National Geographic

Of the many sustainable projects now supported by Alpine Intiatives, the Kithoka Amani Community Home (KACH) in Africa was one that JP poured his heart into. Over the last seven years, Alpine Initiatives has gathered financial support from the snow sports community and has worked hand in hand with International Peace Initiatives and the local community in Africa to build the kitchen, dining hall and surrounding gardens for KACH. Twenty kids now have a safe, loving and nurturing home to call their own.

With the continued work of AI and IPI the foundation has also been laid to ensure a sustainable future for the home, including rainwater catchments, solar thermal, and drip systems for the gardens. More than four acres of land have been transformed into edible gardens for KACH. These gardens not only provide food for the kids, but the sale of excess crops helps subsidize the operating costs of the home. The project has created a local network of more than 100 farmers, who share traditional practices and implement bio intensive and organic gardens.

It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. Maybe the hardest thing [laughs], but still the greatest. You’ll see.
— JP Auclair, in conversation about being a Dad, two nights before leaving for Chile.
